Social Factors Xpert

Deni Ruggeri is associate professor in the department of Landscape Architecture at Cornell University and PhD Candidate in UC Berkeley’s Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning department. He also holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture and a masters in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University and a Laurea in Architettura from Milan’s Polytechnic’s School of Architecture in Milan, Italy.

Deni’s research focuses on the interface between physical environment and human behavior. His research investigates the influence that urban design and landscape architecture has on people’s sense of attachment to their neighborhood, with particular reference to the everyday residential neighborhood landscapes.

Deni’s interest is in the application of social science research methods to environmental and urban design problems, and in creating practical tools for the evaluation of the effects of designed environments on people’s place identity and place attachment. He has recently begun the Post Occupancy Evaluation of three neighborhoods in the new town of Irvine, CA and has accumulated over 70 hours of interviews with residents, designers, critics and academics of the new town.

In addition to his research, Deni has practiced landscape architecture and community design, working on park design and neighborhood design projects for SWA and Design Workshop, two of the foremost Landscape architectural practices in the United States. His most recent projects include the master planning, design and construction of the Jeffrey Open Space Trail in Irvine, California and the master plan for a new town center in Westport, California. He is the co-editor of a spring, 2007 issue of the Journal “Places” as well as of articles published in various conference proceedings.
